
During the
Holding Back The River Tour, another gig was held at the Town And
Country Club, London which was recorded for TV.
Wet's eighth single, Hold Back The River was released on 28th February. the
inspiration for this song came from a drunken man in a pub in Glasgow who said,
"There's no holding back this river."
A tribute to John Lennon was held in Liverpool on 6th May. Wets covered I Feel
Fine.
In order to celebrate Glasgow being the European City Of Culture 1990, a huge
musical event was held. Wets performed in George Square and were joined on stage
by Aswad to sing Is This Love.
Sometime that year while in Australia, Marti and Graeme entered a pub talent
competition and won! the club owner then offered Marti a job as the pub singer.
Once again, Wets performed at the Prince's Trust Gala in July. That same month,
the guys had the honour of leading out the Scotland team at the Glasgow Special
Olympics held at Celtic Park. They performed Hold Back the River and Stay With
Me Heartache which was released on 30th.
The Rock Of Europe event was held in Rotterdam in September.
The Tree & The Bird & The Fish & The Bell was a tribute album, put together by
Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue. It was a tribute to the work of Glasgow photographer,
Oscar Marzaroli. Wets recorded Broke Away for the album.
Wet Wet Wet hired Dave Stewart's luxury studio in LA to record the
High On the
Happy Side album.
Tommy married Elaine Gallagher.
There weren't many live performances in '91. They did do an acoustic set at
Ronnie Scott's club, London in October as a showcase for their forthcoming
album. Make It Tonight and
Put The Light On were released in September and
October respectively. Neither of them were hits. A 5 date tour was held during
November and December. On Christmas Eve,
Goodnight Girl was released and it was
the Wets first self-penned number one.
High On the Happy Side was released on 27th January. This also reached number 1 in the charts which gave them a number 1 single and album at the same time!! The High On The Happy Side Tour started in Manchester on 2nd March and continued throughout the month. During the tour, More Than Love was released.
The Lip Service Tour kicked off on the 29th June, the day prior to the release of the single. As part of the tour, Wets did a special free show on the Isle Of Arran. This show was part of the Radio 1 Roadshow and was broadcast live. 10,000 people attended with many thousands more listening on the radio.
On 4th September, they held a concert at The Forum, Livingston which was a warm
up show for the following night. That happened to be another one off show which
took place at Edinburgh Castle. This show was released on video.
Another video was made available when the band played a charity concert at the Royal Albert Hall with the Wren Orchestra on 3rd November. It was in aid of the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy.

During this year, Tommy, who was now a dad, made an appearance in the Scottish
soap, Take The High Road. Graeme also became a dad and Marti appeared in The
Broon's cartoon strip.
On 26th of April, Blue For You/This Time was released in aid of the Nordoff
Robbins charity. Closely followed by the video and CD album. ALL of the profits
from all three going to the charity.
Graeme and Marti set of for Manhattan in August to meet the producer, Nile
Rodgers. He went on to produce Shed A Tear and
Cold, Cold, Heart.
At this time, Wet Wet Wet set up a sponsorship deal with their local football
team, Clydebank.
To promote Shed A Tear, the band held signing sessions in Glasgow, Manchester,
Birmingham and London. The single was released on 25th and reached number 22.
In late November, they were asked to record a cover for a low budget movie.
They gave it little thought at this time as they were about to release their
greatest hits album, End of Part One. The
End of Part One Tour saw them
travelling the UK between 24th November and 14th December. Cold, Cold Heart
entered the charts just after Christmas.
